The experience
The island sits three kilometers off Acapulco's coast, and the day starts with a hike across it: the only way to see the full span of the place. A professional guide leads a small group through the flora and fauna, pointing out the ocean views that open up as you climb. The pace is relaxed. This is not a scramble. Once you reach the beach on the far side, you have time to settle in and swim, and if your option includes snorkeling, the water here is where you'll do it.
Transport is by air-conditioned minivan, picked up from your hotel or the cruise port. The whole outing runs about five hours from start to finish. Bottled water comes with you, and if you've chosen the lunch option, a Mexican meal waits at a restaurant afterward: green, red, or mole enchiladas; club sandwich; tacos dorados; or a burger with fries, plus one beer or soda. The guide handles the details. Your job is to move at the pace that suits you and take in what's in front of you.
Bring mosquito repellent, sunscreen, long pants, and shoes that grip. The tour runs in all weather, so dress for what Acapulco throws at you that day. Children from age one are welcome, though the hike itself demands at least moderate fitness and a spine and cardiovascular system up to the work.
