The experience
What separates a private lesson from a crowded class is the time your instructor spends on your form. You start on the beach with a briefing on ocean conditions and the mechanics of paddling and standing, then move into the white water in shallow areas where you can focus on balance and movement without the pressure of deeper water. Once you're comfortable, you move into small waves. The lesson runs about three and a half hours, and you can rest whenever you need to.
The remote beaches of East Cape are where the lesson takes place, not a busy resort beach. An air-conditioned vehicle picks you up and brings you there, so you don't need a rental car or a ride arranged separately. Your instructor is experienced and speaks English, and the setup includes a soft board sized for you, a rash guard or wetsuit depending on the season, bottled water, healthy snacks and fruit. Shade, chairs and an ice chest are set up on the beach so you can recover between sessions.
The lesson works for all ages and levels, whether you're getting up on your first wave or you've surfed before. The focus is on finding the right pace for your party, not rushing through a script to fit the next group in.
