Step-by-step itinerary

Jungle hike and summit views

  • Start hike near Patzcuaro Rancheria
  • Follow North Route through jungle
  • Navigate roots, boulders, rugged terrain
  • Reach summit for 360° views
  • Learn about local flora and fauna
  • Relax with water and snack

The experience

The North Route winds through the wildest part of Monkey Mountain, a trail that stays shaded and technical (roots, boulders, uneven ground) rather than the easier path most hikers take. You start near Patzcuaro Rancheria and climb steadily into the Sierra Madre foothills. The guide points out local plants and animals as you go, and at the summit you get a full 360° view: the entire Punta Mita bay, Sayulita's beaches, and jungle stretching to the horizon. It's the kind of hike that rewards the effort.

Transport from your hotel and back is included, along with bottled water and a snack at the top. The guide speaks English and knows the mountain well enough to explain what you're seeing. Two to three hours total means you're done by early afternoon. If the North Route sounds too steep or technical, you can arrange the Higuera Blanca Route instead: a gentler option that covers the same mountain but at a slower pace. Either way, you need to be fit enough for sustained climbing and uneven ground. The hike isn't recommended for travelers with spinal injuries, poor cardiovascular health, or during pregnancy. Children from age six are welcome.

Bring light hiking clothes and proper hiking or tennis shoes. Sunscreen and bug spray aren't provided, so pack both. The hike works best in the late afternoon if you want to catch the light at the summit, though morning departures are available too.

What’s included

  • Bottled water and a snack at the summit.
  • transport from your hotel to the trailhead and back.
  • a live guide in English who explains the local plants and animals along the way.
