The Experience
The first thing that hit me was the smell—warm tortillas and grilled meat drifting from a tiny taco stand on Álvaro Obregón. Our guide, Sofía, waved us over, already chatting with the taquero about which salsa was the least “dangerous.” We tried tacos from Jalisco, then Yucatán cochinita pibil, each one wrapped in its own story. The tortillas were still steaming, and honestly, I could’ve eaten ten more right there.
We wandered through the Roma neighborhood, past old art deco buildings and street vendors selling tamarind candies. At the market, I noticed how the fruit stalls looked almost like art installations—piles of guavas and prickly pears stacked just so. Sofía pointed out a woman making tlacoyos by hand; the smell of masa and beans was everywhere. We sampled Oaxacan cheese, sipped hot chocolate (thick, not too sweet), and even tried a smoky mezcal from Puebla. Somewhere between bites, I realized I’d lost track of time.
The last stop was Sofía’s apartment—a cozy place with mismatched chairs and a view of the jacaranda trees outside. She served us homemade mole with rice and a little glass of agua de jamaica.
