The experience
This tour moves through Merida's working markets and neighborhood eateries, not the tourist corridor. You'll walk through Lucas de Gálvez Market, San Benito Market, García Rejón Market and spots most visitors never find, stopping to taste at seven different food stalls and vendors along the way. Your guide is a local chef born and raised in Yucatán, someone who knows the people behind the food and the stories that don't make it into guidebooks. They introduce you to vendors, explain the history of each dish, and share how Mayan cooking techniques (like the slow-cooking underground method still used today) shape what you're eating.
Tastings include handmade tortillas, slow-cooked Mayan specialties, fresh tropical fruits, local desserts and other dishes the guide picks based on what's best that day. Bottled water and special fruit drinks made from local Yucatan fruits are included. The whole experience unfolds over three hours at a walking pace, so you're moving through the city the way locals do, stopping when something catches your attention or when a vendor has something worth trying. This is small-group only, which means the guide can actually talk to you and the vendors aren't overwhelmed.
