The experience

La Paz's Mexican Spirits Club sits on a terrace in the heart of downtown near the boardwalk, where you'll taste more than 10 different craft spirits in a quiet, relaxed setting. The tasting starts with Jalisco's four varieties of tequila, moves through Oaxaca, Guerrero and Sonora's mezcals, then turns to Baja California Sur's damiana liqueur and finishes with chocolate liquor and flavored tequila served over ice cream. Each spirit comes with carefully chosen pairings (shrimp, meat, cheese, chapulines, guayaba candy and orange salt with worm), so you're not just tasting the distillate but learning how it sits alongside food.

The guide walks you through the elaboration process and history of each spirit, talking about where it comes from and how to pick out the different flavors. Traditional Mexican music plays in the background while you work through the lineup. The whole experience runs 90 minutes, which gives you time to linger over each tasting without the pace feeling rushed.
