experience

What’s the experience like?

“Did you know there are only two pyramid sites by the water in all of Mexico?” our guide asked as we stepped off the cool van, the early sun already warming the path. The Copalita Pyramids felt almost hidden behind thick green trees, with the faint sound of waves somewhere beyond. I could smell wet earth after last night’s rain, and a few birds darted between the branches overhead as we followed our guide into the site.

Walking through Copalita Ecological Park, we stopped at weathered stone platforms older than most cities I’ve visited. Our guide explained how people lived here over 2,000 years ago—using shells from the nearby shore for tools and trading along these same riverbanks. I ran my hand along a rough wall still cool from shade, trying to imagine ancient ceremonies happening right where we stood. Every so often, a salty breeze drifted in from the ocean, mixing with the scent of wild plants around us.

Before heading back, we made a quick stop in downtown Huatulco. It was just enough time to grab a cold drink and watch local families chatting on shaded benches. The whole morning felt like stepping between two worlds—the old stones by the sea and today’s lively town just minutes away.
