The experience

“Did you know there are only two pyramid sites by the water in all of Mexico?” our guide asked as we stepped off the cool van, the early sun already warming the path. The Copalita Pyramids felt almost hidden behind thick green trees, with the faint sound of waves somewhere beyond. I could smell wet earth after last night’s rain, and a few birds darted between the branches overhead as we followed our guide into the site.

Walking through Copalita Ecological Park, we stopped at weathered stone platforms older than most cities I’ve visited.
