Master kite control and waterstart in one morning session

A three-hour group kiteboarding lesson in Tulum pairs you with one IKO certified instructor and one other student for a progression from beach theory through riding downwind and upwind. You learn kite setup, safety systems, body drag, and waterstart techniques, then ride the board with guidance. Equipment, showers and Wi-Fi are included.

The experience

Three hours covers the full arc from sand to water. The lesson starts on the beach with kite and wind theory, then moves through setup, bar mechanics and self-rescue before you ever touch the water. Once in the shallows, you practice body drag upwind and power strokes, building the feel for the kite's pull before attempting a waterstart. The instructor stays close through assisted attempts, then watches you launch solo.

The progression is built for two students and one guide, so you're not waiting in a rotation. IKO certified instructors renew the gear every year, and the school has held the review sites #1 ranking for kite and SUP instruction in Tulum for seven years. Helmets come equipped with Bluetooth radio so the instructor can talk you through each step without shouting over the wind.

By the end, you're riding downwind and upwind, linking transitions between them. The beach has bathrooms, showers and Wi-Fi, so you can rinse off and sit dry before heading back to the rest of your day.

What’s included

  • Use of kiteboarding gear and helmet.
  • access to bathrooms, showers and Wi-Fi.
  • instruction from an IKO certified guide in English or Spanish.

What's the difference between a group lesson and a private one in kiteboarding?

Group lessons in Tulum pair you with one other student and one instructor, which keeps the cost lower and gives you a peer to learn alongside. Private lessons are one-on-one, so the instructor's attention never splits, but they cost more and take longer to book.

Do I need to know how to swim or have any kiteboarding experience to start?

No prior kiteboarding experience is required. You should have at least a moderate level of physical fitness and be comfortable in the water, since the lesson moves into waist-deep and deeper areas. The minimum age is 10 years old.

What happens if the wind is too light or too strong on the day of my lesson?

The lesson runs in the conditions present that day. Tulum's Caribbean coast has consistent wind, but if conditions are unsafe, the instructor will adjust the progression or reschedule. The school operates year-round, so alternative dates are usually available.

Are the helmets and boards included, or do I need to bring my own gear?

Kiteboarding gear is included in the lesson price. The school replaces equipment annually and provides helmets with Bluetooth radio communication built in so the instructor can guide you through each step.
