The experience
The evening starts at sunset in San Miguel, where the town square fills with local families, marimba music and corn grilling on the corner: the place as people who actually live here use it. Then you drive into the jungle. Once there, you're handed your own candle and walk to four stations waiting in the dark, each one built around something you do with your hands and a story the guide tells.
At the first station you grind ceremonial cacao on a volcanic stone metate, the way it was ground when cacao was money and not dessert. By lantern light you meet Melipona bees (endangered stingless bees that physically cannot sting), and taste honey straight from the hive with your fingers. Around the fire you try a regional sugar cane drink made only in Yucatán. The final station is the food: you crush guacamole and Sikil P'aak in a stone molcajete, press your own tortilla on a clay griddle over open flame, and fold it into a quesadilla you eat while it's still too hot to hold. Each station has its legend. The feathered serpent who gave cacao to humankind, the diving bee god, the jungle guardian who must be offered a drink before anyone builds or plants, the Popol Vuh story of the gods who made human beings out of corn.
There's no stage, no costumes, no show. The guide speaks English or Spanish and travels with you in a private air-conditioned van. Groups stay under twelve, and one departure runs each night. Children receive hot cacao and honey instead of the full meal. Water is included. Bring cash if you want to tip the guide.

Is this one for you?Choose the van if your group is larger or you want to meet other travelers. Pick the jeep for a smaller, more intimate group. Either way, the candle-lit stations and hands-on cooking mean you're doing the activity, not watching a demonstration, so wear clothes you don't mind getting messy around the fire and the stone grinding tools.

Top questions
What languages is the tour guided in?
Live guide in English and Spanish.
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
What exactly do I cook and eat on this activity?
You press your own tortilla on a clay griddle over an open fire and fold it into a quesadilla with guacamole and Sikil P'aak, a traditional Yucatecan dip, that you eat hot. Children receive hot cacao and honey instead of the full meal. Water is provided throughout the evening.
Can I do this activity if I have kids with me?
Kids are welcome. Children participate in the hands-on stations (grinding cacao, meeting the bees, tasting honey and pressing tortillas), but receive hot cacao and honey instead of the full dinner at the end.
How does the candle work at each station in the jungle?
You carry your own candle as you walk between the four stations in the dark. Each station is lit by lantern light, so you can see what you're doing: grinding cacao, tasting honey, drinking the sugar cane beverage, and cooking your tortilla over the fire.
What's included in the price, and what do I need to bring?
The activity includes private van pickup from San Miguel, the guide, all food and drink at the four stations, bottled water, and the air-conditioned vehicle. Gratuities for the guide are not included. Bring cash if you want to tip.
Do I choose between the van and the jeep, and does it change what I do?
You choose your vehicle at checkout: a van holds up to twelve passengers, and a jeep holds four. Both options follow the same route, visit the same four stations, and include the same hands-on activities and meal. The jeep is smaller and more intimate. The van accommodates larger groups.
