The experience

You arrive at Chichen Itza near opening time, which means the site is still quiet and you skip the line at the gate. A certified guide walks you through the archaeology for roughly an hour and a half: the Castle of Kukulcán and its solar calendar, the largest ball court in Mesoamerica, the Temple of the Warriors, and the story of the Itzáes who built it. After the guided portion, you have about an hour to wander on your own, climb what you want, or sit with what you've just learned.

From there you head to a remote cenote: a natural sinkhole and freshwater pool set back from the main roads. This is where the day shifts from archaeology to nature. You can swim or rest in the quiet, and lunch arrives made by women from the local Mayan community. The cenote is the break in the middle of the day that makes the full itinerary possible without exhaustion.

Your last stop is Izamal, a colonial town painted in shades of yellow, built partly on Mayan foundations. The 16th-century convent here sits directly on top of a Mayan pyramid, and you can still climb some of the Mayan structures that remain.
