The Experience

The first thing I remember is the sound—those chunky tires crunching over dry gravel as we rolled into Tierra Sagrada, this ranch tucked between cactus and blue sky outside Cabo San Lucas. Our guide, Paco, handed me a helmet and grinned like he knew what was coming. I could smell sun-warmed sage and something spicy from the kitchen drifting over. The gear felt weird at first, all stiff and padded, but honestly I was glad for it once we hit the trail.

Back at the ranch, my hands were still buzzing when we sat down for lunch—ocean view, salt in the air, plates loaded with quesadillas and things I couldn’t pronounce (Li laughed when I tried to say “chiles en nogada” in Spanish). The buffet was endless: beans with smoky heat, tortillas warm from the grill, sweet agua fresca dripping down my wrist. Someone poured tequila for tasting; I sipped slow because Paco said “sip, don’t shoot.” He was right. There’s a burn that turns sweet if you wait for it.

I keep thinking about that moment on the trail when everything went quiet except for wind and distant surf. Not sure you can get that feeling anywhere else—not in town anyway.
