Step-by-step itinerary

Tour Bacalar lagoon and cenotes

  • Meet at CASA ARABE pier
  • Captain introduction and instructions
  • Navigate Laguna de los 7 colores
  • Visit cenotes Negro, Esmeralda, Cocalitos
  • Swim in Pirate's Canal
  • Explore Bird Island and birdwatch
  • Enjoy seasonal fruit, water, and beer

The Experience

The boat leaves from Casa Arabe pier 15 minutes after your arrival time, and the captain briefs the group on safety and what to expect before the engine starts. From there the tour moves through the Laguna de los 7 Colores—the Seven Colors Lagoon—stopping at three cenotes where the water shifts from deep blue to emerald depending on the depth and mineral content. You swim in each one, moving between Negro, Esmeralda and Cocalitos at the captain's pace.

The Pirate Channel is the centerpiece: a narrow passage of water so clear and still that it feels separate from the lagoon itself. This is where most of the swimming time goes. Bird Island comes last, a low mangrove stand where local and migratory species gather depending on the season—the captain knows which birds are likely to be there when you visit.

The boat carries snacks and drinks: seasonal fruit, bottled water, and a cold beer for anyone over 18. Rain doesn't stop the tour; only a hurricane alert or port closure issued by maritime authorities will cancel it. The whole outing runs 2.5 hours from pier to return.
