The experience
The day starts early with hotel pickup from Merida, followed by a short stop to buy water and snacks before the 5-hour-45-minute drive south. You'll break the journey at Mercado de José María Morelos, a local food market where you can choose from different stalls for breakfast, use facilities and stretch your legs before continuing to Bacalar.
Once you arrive, you board a small boat for a guided 2-hour excursion across the lagoon. The tour visits four cenotes: Esmeralda, Negro, Cocalitos and Isla Pájaros. You can swim in the water at each stop and learn about the area's history and geology from your guide. The lagoon's famous seven colors come from different cenotes feeding into it, each with its own mineral composition and depth.
After the boat tour, you head to La Playita restaurant facing the lagoon, where you have free time to order from a variety of food options and swim again if you want. Lunch is not included in the tour price. The final stop is Cenote Azul, a natural sinkhole roughly 200 meters across and 90 meters deep: the deepest cenote in Mexico. You can swim and relax here before the drive back to Merida in the air-conditioned vehicle.

Is this one for you?The full day (nearly 16 hours with a long drive each way) suits travelers who want to see the lagoon's colors and swim at multiple cenotes without splitting the trip across two days. If you prefer a shorter outing or want to stay overnight in Bacalar, a different tour may fit better.
