experience

What’s the experience like?

We rolled into Izamal just as the sun hit the yellow walls—everything really is yellow here. Our guide, Sofia, waved us out of the van and pointed at the convent arches. She told us about the Mayan pyramid hidden behind all that color. I tried to climb it (a little out of breath halfway up), but the view from the top—rooftops and tangled trees—felt worth it. There was this old man selling paletas by the plaza who nodded at us; I still remember the lime one melting too fast in my hand.

The drive to Cenote Ik Kil was quiet—fields blurring past. When we got there, I didn’t expect how cool the air would feel dropping down those stone steps. The water looked almost black until you got close. Jumping in was honestly a shock (in a good way). A couple of kids were laughing and splashing around; it echoed off the rock walls. After swimming, we had lunch right nearby—chicken with achiote and tortillas that tasted smoky somehow. Sofia laughed when I asked for more salsa; apparently “picante” means business here.

Chichen Itza came last. We walked through a line of trees and suddenly there was El Castillo—the Pyramid of Kukulkán—just sitting there in soft afternoon light. Fewer people than I expected. Sofia explained how shadows mark the equinox (I pretended to understand). The ball court felt enormous, like you could hear old games if you listened hard enough. There was a moment near the Observatory where everything went quiet except for birds somewhere up high—I don’t know why that stuck with me.
