The Experience

The first thing I noticed in Acanceh wasn’t the ruins — it was the sound of someone sweeping their front step, just this soft scrape against old stone. Our guide, Marta, waved us over to a little square where kids were chasing each other around a Mayan carving that looked older than any church I’ve ever seen. She pointed out how the town’s name means “cry of the deer,” which I probably pronounced wrong (Marta didn’t laugh, but her eyes did). The ruins here aren’t massive like Chichen Itza, but they feel lived-in. There’s laundry flapping on lines right next to ancient walls. It’s strange and kind of beautiful.

After that we drove out to Santa Barbara — not far, maybe 40 minutes from Merida. The air felt heavier there, thick with green smells and a hint of wood smoke from someone’s lunch. You get to choose: take a rattly little truck pulled by a horse (they call it a “truck” but it’s really more like an old mining cart), or grab a bike and pedal between the cenotes. I went for the bike because why not? The path is bumpy and you’ll get dusty, but then you roll up to these blue-green holes in the ground that look almost fake until you dip your toes in. Each cenote is different — one’s open and sunlit, another is down steep steps into echoing dark water where every splash sounds huge.

I lost track of time swimming and floating under tree roots hanging like curtains. There were only a few other people around — mostly local families who seemed to know exactly which spot was best for jumping in (I copied them and nearly lost my nerve at the last second). When we finally dried off, Marta led us back for lunch — cochinita pibil with tortillas that someone’s abuela made fresh right there. I still think about that smell: corn and citrus and something smoky drifting through the open-air kitchen.

On the way back to Merida my legs felt tired in a good way, like after a long day at the beach as a kid. I kept replaying those quiet moments underwater — sunlight flickering through roots above me, everything muffled except my own breath. If you’re looking for something loud or polished this isn’t it; but if you want to actually feel Yucatán for a day… well, yeah.
