Four cenotes in one morning: two under open sky, two inside caverns carved from limestone.

A guided cenote tour at Casa Tortuga in Tulum takes you through four distinct pools (two open to the sky and two sheltered inside cavern walls) with time to swim at each one. After visiting all four, you get two hours of free time to return to whichever cenote you prefer, plus access to the property's restaurant, bar, and hammock areas overlooking the water. A live guide leads the experience in English or Spanish.

The experience

The tour runs nine hours and moves through all four cenotes with a guide who explains what you're seeing as you go. Two of the pools sit exposed to daylight and air. The other two are enclosed in cave systems where the water stays cool and still. You swim at each cenote, so bring a change of clothes and plan to get wet. Snorkelling equipment is provided if you want to see what lives beneath the surface.

After the guided portion ends, the second half of the day is yours. You pick one cenote, whichever felt best to you, and spend two uninterrupted hours there. The property has a restaurant and bar if you want lunch or a drink, and hammocks and lounge chairs scattered across the grounds with views of the water. Dressing rooms are available, and you can rinse off before heading back.

The guide speaks English or Spanish depending on which option you book. If you choose the VIP option, lunch is included in the price. The Basic option and Platinum option do not include a meal. Ziplining is available as an add-on with the Platinum and VIP packages. Infants can come along. They can ride in a stroller or sit on an adult's lap in the water.

Yes. Ticket types: Child (under 6).

What's the difference between the cenotes that are open to the sky and the ones inside caverns?

The two open-air cenotes let in natural light and feel more exposed, while the two cavern cenotes are enclosed in cave systems where the water is sheltered and the air stays cooler. Both types are swimmable and included in the tour.

How much time do I actually spend swimming versus being guided around?
