Step-by-step itinerary

Jungle adventure and wildlife experience

  • Walk through jungle nature reserve
  • Observe wild spider and howler monkeys
  • See tropical birds and wild iguanas
  • Visit beautiful lagoon
  • Swim in natural cenote
  • Enjoy local lunch with drinks and snacks

The experience

The reserve sits inside working jungle, not a park built for tourists. You walk on trails where the monkeys live, which means you hear them before you see them: the howler monkeys make a sound like a cross between a roaring engine and a chainsaw, and it carries through the canopy. Spider monkeys move faster and higher in the trees. The guide knows where to look and when, and can point out iguanas and the tropical birds that move through the same space. This is not a cage or a sanctuary. The animals are wild and the sightings depend on the day.

After the jungle walk, you swim in the lagoon and then in a cenote: a natural sinkhole filled with fresh water, the kind the ancient Maya used. The cenote stays cool year-round and sits surrounded by rock and roots. Lunch is local food, not a tourist plate, and comes with water, coffee, snacks and drinks throughout the day. The whole tour runs six hours from pickup to drop-off, with a guide who speaks English or Spanish.

You choose pickup from either Tulum or Akumal when you book. The tour is private, so it is just you and your group with the guide: no joining a larger group partway through. Wear clothes you do not mind getting wet and bring sunscreen. The jungle canopy offers shade but the cenote and lagoon are in the open.

What kind of monkeys will I actually see at Punta Laguna?
