The experience
The day starts at Trou aux Cerfs, an extinct volcanic crater near Curepipe where you walk the rim and take in views across the island's central plateau. From there, the route moves through South Mauritius to Takamaka Winery on the southern slopes, where you taste lychee wine and learn how the vineyard produces its local varieties. The stops build toward the three tastings that anchor the experience: wine first, then tea, then rum.
At Bois Chéri Tea Factory, one of Mauritius' oldest tea estates, you tour the plantation and sample the house's finest teas while looking out over the surrounding mountains. After the tea tasting comes a 3-course Mauritian meal, a starter, a main of grilled or curried fish or chicken with rice and chutneys, and a dessert like banana flambé or ice cream. The meal sits between the second and third tasting, breaking up the day and giving you a real sense of how the island's food culture blends Indian, African, Chinese and French influences.
Saint Aubin Rhumerie, a historic distillery in the south, closes the tasting sequence. You tour the sugarcane fields, the old machinery and the aging cellars, then sample a range of local rums including flavored varieties. The estate itself, a colonial house with gardens, is worth the walk around. Your private driver-guide speaks English, French or Hindi throughout, and the air-conditioned vehicle handles all transport between sites. Hotel pickup and drop-off are included, along with bottled water and soft drinks during lunch.
