The Experience

The owner of the guesthouse where we stayed mentioned it casually over breakfast — said the tea plantation up in the south was worth the drive, that the people there actually knew what they were doing. Bois Chéri has been running since 1892, which is long enough that they've stopped trying to impress anyone and just focus on the work. You get picked up from your hotel and driven toward the interior, and the landscape shifts from coast to something greener, quieter. The plantation itself sits high enough that you can see across the southern part of the island, which is the kind of view that makes you understand why someone planted tea here in the first place.

A guide walks you through the factory floor first — the actual machinery where the leaves get sorted and dried, the smell of it sharp and alive. Then the production museum, which is smaller than you'd expect but dense with the real history of how tea became part of Mauritius, not just a crop but a thing people built their lives around.
