The experience

The hike starts in the morning on a 6 km trail that begins flat and shaded at the base, then steepens as you move into the dry, rough terrain of the mountain. Your certified guide will point out the Paille en Queue sea bird, indigenous plants, and the caves that once sheltered runaway slaves. The second half of the climb is steeper and more exposed. The guides provide equipment for the rocky sections, and you'll need good trekking shoes and sun protection. The summit sits at a metal cross marking the highest accessible point, where you can see Ile aux Benitiers, Le Morne beach, and the lagoon stretching out below. The entire hike takes three to four hours.

After descending, your driver takes you to the jetty for a boat ride to Islet Fourneau, an island thick with endemic plants. A chef greets you with a welcoming cocktail, then serves a 3-course BBQ lunch: fish or chicken with sides and salads, or a vegetarian option if you've requested it in advance. Soft drinks, water and beer are included throughout the meal. You'll have free time to swim in the lagoon, snorkel, walk the beach or relax on a sunbed facing Le Morne Mountain. Water sports are available for an extra cost if you want them.
