Hike through forest and across basalt rock to reach seven stacked waterfalls, then swim and eat where the water falls.

A full-day guided hike to Tamarind Falls in Mauritius takes you to seven waterfalls stacked in a green valley, where you swim in natural pools, enjoy a natural massage under the cascades, and eat a three-course lunch beside the water. The trip runs 6 to 7 hours from 9 a.m., includes hotel pickup and private transport, and suits hikers aged 11 and up with moderate fitness. A certified guide leads in your choice of language and handles all equipment and safety briefing.

The experience

You start with pickup from your hotel anywhere on the island and meet your guide at Henrietta, the trailhead in the foothills. The hike itself mixes forest walking and scrambling across open basalt rock beside the water, moving between the seven falls as the guide shows you each one. The path is moderate (not steep or technical), and designed to suit beginners who are comfortable on their feet for several hours. Along the way you'll see white-tailed tropical seabirds, exotic plants and the thick green canopy that makes the valley feel closed off from the rest of the island.

At each waterfall you can swim in the natural pools or stand under the cascade for what the operator calls a natural massage. Around midday, near one of the falls, you'll sit down to a three-course lunch with vegetarian and non-vegetarian options, plus bottled water, energy drinks and local snacks. The guide brings all safety gear and equipment. You just need to wear non-slippery shoes, bring extra clothes and swimming gear, and apply sun cream and insect repellent before you start. The hike ends by 2 p.m., leaving the rest of your afternoon free.

Your guide is a certified professional who speaks English, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian and more than 20 other languages, and will adapt the pace and stops to your fitness level and interests. The entire trip (transport, guide, lunch, equipment and photography) is included in one private booking for a minimum of two people.

Is this one for you?The 6- to 7-hour commitment means you leave by 9 a.m. and return by 2 p.m., so the trip fits a single day without eating into an evening or requiring an early start that cuts into the night before. If you need more flexibility or want to combine this with other activities, the fixed schedule won't work. If you're staying near Trou d'Eau Douce or elsewhere on the island and want a full immersion in one place, the duration is ideal.
