The experience
The tour starts with hotel pickup and a drive to Bois Chéri Tea Factory, where a guide leads you through the plantation and production museum to learn the history of tea in Mauritius. You'll taste the factory's range of teas (green, herbal and flavored), while taking in panoramic views of the south coast. From there, the route heads to Blue Bay Marine Park, where the snorkeling conditions are ideal: crystal clear water, average depth of 5.5 meters, and visibility that lets you see the reef, fish and corals without strain. You can choose to view the underwater world through the glass bottom of the boat or enter the water with snorkeling gear provided by the operator. The park is home to damselfish, surgeonfish, butterflyfish, juvenile sailfin tangs, pipefish and trumpetfish, and all activities are supervised to protect the marine ecosystem.
After snorkeling, you'll head to a local restaurant for a 3-course lunch of fresh salads, rice, soups, chicken, fish and vegetables, with non-alcoholic beverages included. The afternoon moves through Mahebourg's cultural and historical sites: the National History Museum, which holds artifacts from shipwrecks, bones of extinct giant tortoises and the dodo, and traces the island's colonial past back to the 18th century; the Mahebourg waterfront, a traditional village setting where you can see the Bataille de la Passe memorial and learn about the naval battle that shaped the island's history; the local market, where you'll find handicrafts, souvenirs and street food like briyani and dholl puri; the Frederick Hendrick Museum at Old Grand Port, where Dutch and French colonial ruins and archaeological artifacts sit in a tropical garden; and finally Pointe Canon, a viewpoint overlooking the bay, Lion Mountain, and the protected nature reserve of Île aux Aigrettes.
