The experience
Blue Bay Marine Park sits at an average depth of 5.5 meters with visibility clear enough to see the reef, fish and corals without strain. You choose whether to watch the underwater world through the glass bottom of a boat or jump in with snorkeling gear, both are included. The park's mangroves and seagrasses shelter damselfish, surgeonfish, butterflyfish and smaller species like pipefish. The snorkeling conditions here rank among Mauritius's best, and all activities are supervised to protect the marine ecosystem.
The day starts with pickup at your accommodation anywhere on the island, then heads to Rhumerie St Aubin, a colonial-era rum distillery set in a tropical garden. A guide walks you through the sugar factory and rum-making process, then you taste the different rums the estate produces. After Blue Bay, you sit down to a 3-course lunch of fresh salads, rice, soups, chicken, fish and vegetables at a local restaurant, with non-alcoholic beverages included. Vegetarian and halal options are available if you request them when booking.
The second half moves through Mahebourg's layered history. The National History Museum holds naval artifacts, shipwreck remains, and bones of extinct giant tortoises and dodos: a record of the island from the 18th century onward. You walk the Mahebourg waterfront to see the Bataille de la Passe memorial, which honors fighters from a regional battle and offers a panoramic view of where it took place. A stop at the local market lets you browse handicrafts, souvenirs and street food like dholl puri and gato pima. The Frederik Hendrick Museum, surrounded by tropical gardens, preserves the remains of Mauritius's first human settlement, with artifacts from Dutch and French colonial occupation. Finally, Pointe Canon gives you a viewpoint over the southeast coast, the Lion Mountain, and the protected Ile aux Aigrettes.
