The experience
The route starts at your hotel and moves through the island's largest national park, Black River Gorges, which covers 6,754 hectares and holds endemic plants and animals found nowhere else. You'll stop at Alexandra Falls and its viewpoint, and if the season is right, pick goyaves de chine like locals do. The drive also passes Mare-aux-Vacoas, Mauritius' largest reservoir, on the way to Grand Bassin: a crater lake the Hindu population considers sacred. You'll walk around the temples there, see the tall Shiva statue, and watch for monkeys and wildlife in the quiet surroundings. Note: the area may be closed in February or March during the Mahashivaratree pilgrimage festival.
At Chamarel, the Seven Coloured Earth Geopark shows the geological dunes that give the site its name, and the Chamarel Waterfall, the highest single-drop waterfall in Mauritius, stands nearby in dense vegetation. Before leaving, you'll see the giant tortoise pens. Then comes the Chamarel Distillery, where you tour the rum-making process and taste different varieties while looking out over sugarcane plantations and tropical fruit groves. Lunch is a full Mauritian meal with a starter, main course and dessert, plus non-alcoholic drinks, eaten as part of the tour.
This is a private tour, so your group travels alone with the guide. Hotel pickup and dropoff are included, as are all entrance fees to the parks and sites. The guide speaks English or French.
