The Experience
Salt in the air, sun on my arms—right from the dock, you can tell this isn’t your usual boat ride. Our captain, a fisherman since he was a kid, greeted us with a grin and a quick joke about the pelicans eyeing his catch. We climbed aboard with just eight others—no crowds, just easy chatter and the soft slap of water against the hull.
The ride out to the white shoals near François and Robert felt like slipping into a secret world. The water’s so clear you spot starfish right off the side. At one point, we slowed down to watch a local guy in a tiny canoe haul in his nets—our captain waved and swapped a few words in Creole. There’s this light breeze that keeps things cool, even when the sun’s high. You’ll notice how quiet it gets, away from bigger boats—just the hum of our engine and the occasional laugh from someone spotting a stingray below.
Lunch was something else. We anchored in shallow turquoise water, toes dangling over the edge, while our captain grilled up fish he’d caught that morning.
