The Experience

Ever wondered what it’s like to wander through Mdina when the crowds thin out and the stones almost hum under your feet? I didn’t think much about it until our driver—Mario, who grew up just outside Rabat—slowed down by a sunlit archway and pointed out where his grandmother used to buy bread. The air was warm, but inside those alleys it felt cool and almost silent except for our footsteps. I kept stopping to look up at old wooden balconies; Mario just grinned and let us take our time.

We zigzagged through Malta in that air-conditioned van (thankful for it, honestly), passing fields dotted with prickly pears. At Dingli Cliffs, the wind picked up—salty and sharp—and for a minute nobody said anything. You could see all the way out to Filfla island. It’s one of those views you try to hold onto, even though you know you’ll forget the exact color of the water later. Mario told us how locals come here at sunset with pastizzi from a bakery nearby. I still think about that view sometimes.

The Blue Grotto was next—honestly, I’d seen photos but didn’t expect the water to really look that blue. There were boats bobbing around below us, and some kids laughing as they tried to skip stones (not very successfully). We didn’t do the boat trip this time but just standing above the caves was enough for me. Then off again—to Hagar Qim temple, where you can touch stones older than most countries. The rocks felt rough and warm under my hand; someone had left a sprig of wild thyme on one of them.

Lunch? We stopped in Marsaxlokk for fish so fresh it still smelled faintly of saltwater—Mario waved at half the people in the restaurant. He offered to adjust our route if we wanted more time anywhere or to squeeze in Ta’ Qali Crafts Village (we did). The glassblowing there is loud and mesmerizing; I’m still not sure how they make those colors swirl inside clear glass like that.
