The Experience

We were already winding through the narrow streets of Valletta when our driver, Joseph, pointed out a tiny bakery with a line out the door. “Best pastizzi on the island,” he said, so of course we stopped. I bit into one still warm from the oven—flaky pastry and that soft ricotta filling—and honestly, I could’ve just stayed there eating for an hour. But Joseph had other ideas. He asked what we wanted to see most (I mumbled something about old cities and sea views), then mapped out a route that somehow fit it all in. The van was new and cool inside, which felt like a small miracle after stepping out into that bright Maltese sun.

Mdina was next—quiet stone alleys echoing with footsteps, sunlight bouncing off honey-colored walls. Joseph told us stories about knights and sieges while we wandered; he seemed to know everyone we passed (lots of nods and quick hellos). There was this moment where I just stood in a shady archway listening to church bells somewhere nearby—felt like time slowed down for a second. We didn’t rush; if we wanted to linger at the crafts village or grab coffee by the waterfront, he just shrugged and said, “It’s your day.”

I didn’t expect to laugh so much during a private tour but Joseph had jokes about every roundabout (“Malta’s national sport is finding your exit”) and even taught us how to say thank you in Maltese (I definitely butchered it).
