Step-by-step itinerary

Island hopping and cultural tour

  • Meet guide at designated point
  • Tour first local island
  • Visit boat building yard
  • Snorkel between islands
  • Tour second local island
  • Have lunch at local restaurant
  • Visit souvenir shops

The experience

The day starts at your meeting point in Hulhumale, where your guide arrives wearing a Secret Paradise t-shirt and holding a logo board. From there, you travel by boat to the first local island, where the guide walks you through the village and explains daily life, traditions and the fragile ecosystem that sustains the Maldives. A visit to an active boat building yard shows how craftspeople construct vessels by hand: a skill passed down through generations. Lunch happens at a local restaurant on one of the islands, giving you a chance to eat what residents eat rather than resort food.

Between the two islands, you get time to snorkel with provided equipment and a buoyancy aid. The reef here is alive with fish and coral. You see it at your own pace in the water. The guide stays with the group and is trained as an Emergency First Responder and Life Guard, so safety is built into every stop. The tour runs about six and a half hours total, which leaves room for souvenir shops on the islands if you want to buy local handicrafts before heading back to Hulhumale.

Dress matters on inhabited islands: women should wear t-shirts, loose shorts or sarongs rather than bikinis or swimwear (bikinis are fine only on uninhabited islands, sandbars or resort beaches). Men can wear t-shirts and shorts. The operator follows World Travel & Tourism Council safety standards and Maldives Safe Tourism Guidelines, and the tour is not suitable if you're staying on a private island resort.

Is this one for you?Book this tour if you want to step off the resort island and see how Maldivians actually live, rather than stay in the tourist bubble. The guide's knowledge of village life and the boat yard visit give you access to a side of the Maldives most day trips skip, and the snorkeling between islands means you're not just watching. You're in the water yourself.
