The experience
The tour starts with pickup from your hotel in Ipoh or Taiping and a 1.5-hour drive to Orang Utan Island. You'll walk through a semi-circle steel-fence tunnel enclosure where you observe orangutans roaming free in the trees, on the grass and by the lake while a guide from Bukit Merah Orang Utan Island Foundation explains the details of this endangered species. The island visit runs about an hour. If water levels are low or the island is closed, the operator replaces it with a visit to Taiping's heritage town instead.
After the island, a half-hour drive takes you to Kota Kuala Selangor, a Malay fort built by a local chieftain and a state historical site marking the start of the tin mining boom that shaped Taiping. Next is a stop at an incense workshop where you'll see workers add layers and colors to ceremonial pieces: some take months to finish. A 15-minute drive into the mangrove forest brings you to a charcoal factory, where you learn the traditional method of producing wood charcoal in a dome-shaped kiln.
The final stop is Taiping Lake Garden, regarded as one of the most beautiful gardens in the region and the first lake garden in Malaya. You'll have time to stroll and take in the views. Lunch is arranged nearby before or after this visit, though meals are not included in the tour price. Let your guide know of any dietary restrictions. The return journey to Ipoh takes about 1.5 hours.
