The experience
Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre sits 25 kilometres west of Sandakan in the Kabili-Seppilok Forest Reserve, where rescued orphaned orangutans have been cared for since the centre opened in 1964. You walk a boardwalk through lowland rainforest to reach the feeding platform where orangutans come to eat. The centre rescues animals from logging sites, plantations and illegal hunting. From there the tour moves to Labuk Bay Proboscis Monkey Sanctuary in the mangrove forests of Semawang, where you watch Borneo's indigenous proboscis monkeys feed at their own platform in their natural habitat.
The Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre focuses on rehabilitation and research for the Malayan sun bear, the world's smallest bear species: adults stand roughly 120 to 150 centimetres tall and weigh between 27 and 65 kilograms. After the sanctuaries, the tour includes a visit to Puh Jih Shih Buddhist Temple, built in 1987 on a hilltop overlooking Sandakan Bay, and a stroll through Sandakan Central Market where hundreds of stalls display local goods and food. Lunch at a local restaurant is included, along with all entrance fees and transport in an air-conditioned vehicle with an English-speaking guide.
