Chocolate-brown river at golden hour, wildlife moving through the canopy.

A small-group day tour from Sandakan that departs in the morning, drives through oil palm plantations and rural villages to reach the Kinabatangan River, then cruises at sunset in search of Borneo's endemic wildlife. You'll stop for high tea at a riverside restaurant before boarding the boat, explore tributaries with an English or Malay-speaking guide, and return for dinner before the drive back to town. Wildlife sightings depend on conditions and luck, but the guide will search for proboscis monkeys, macaques, hornbills, orangutans and pygmy elephants.

The experience

The day starts with pickup from Wisma Khoo or Sepilok in Sandakan, then a shared vehicle carries the group through rural villages and oil palm plantations toward the river: a journey of more than two hours each way depending on traffic and road conditions. You'll arrive at a restaurant overlooking the Kinabatangan, where high tea gives you time to settle in and watch the light begin to shift before the wildlife cruise begins.

The river cruise happens at dusk, when the golden hour enhances the light across the water and animals move through the canopy. Your guide will search the banks and tributaries for proboscis monkeys, macaques, hornbills, orangutans and pygmy elephants: the endemic species that make this stretch of the Kinabatangan one of Asia's most concentrated wildlife corridors. Sightings are never guaranteed because the animals roam freely, and weather and river conditions shape what is reachable on any given day, but the guide will work to locate what is there. You'll wear a life jacket during the cruise and keep an eye out for bird life, including Borneo's legendary hornbills.

After the cruise, you return to the lodge or restaurant for an early dinner, with time to relax and listen to the birds before heading back to the jetty. The return drive to Sandakan takes the same route and duration as the morning journey, ending the day roughly nine hours after pickup.
