The experience
The drive from Johor Bahru to Kuala Lumpur takes three to four hours, leaving you seven to eight hours to move through the city itself. That's enough time to see multiple landmarks without rushing, but only if you skip the ones that don't matter to you. The operator builds the itinerary on the spot: you tell the guide which attractions interest you. Batu Caves with its 400-million-year-old limestone and rainbow-colored steps, the Royal Selangor Visitor Centre to watch pewter being made, the Petronas Twin Towers and the free KLCC Park where you photograph them, Merdeka Square where Malaysia declared independence, or any of the temples and markets on the list. You're not locked into a fixed schedule or a set number of stops.
Batu Caves is a limestone hill and one of the most important Tamil shrines outside India. The site draws visitors for the colored steps leading up and the views from the top. The Royal Selangor Visitor Centre walks you through the history of pewter manufacturing. The Petronas Twin Towers, 88 floors and built on Islamic art principles, stand as the most recognizable landmark in Malaysia. The sky bridge linking them is a popular photo spot, and the surrounding KLCC Park and Suria shopping center are free to explore. Merdeka Square holds the 95-metre flagpole, one of the world's tallest, and hosts the annual National Day Parade. Thean Hou Temple, one of Southeast Asia's oldest and largest, borrows from Buddhist, Taoist and Confucian traditions and offers panoramic views of the city. Sri Mahamariamman Temple, built in 1873, is Kuala Lumpur's oldest Hindu temple. Central Market and Petaling Street in Chinatown sell traditional batiks, handmade crafts and souvenirs. The market layout echoes the traditional markets that have existed in the city since the 1800s. The King's Palace with its golden domes is a landmark for photographs. Putrajaya's pink-domed Putra Mosque, one of the world's most modern, can hold 15,000 worshippers.
Your guide is a local driver who speaks your language and recommends where to eat. Many small eateries take only cash, so bring Malaysian Ringgit. If you want to stay into the evening, you can opt for the night tour ending at midnight to see the Petronas Twin Towers lit up and the KLCC Lake Symphony. The KLCC Viewing Deck (the high-angle observation deck) is not included and must be booked separately in advance because availability is limited.
