The experience

The drive from your hotel takes about 90 minutes through countryside and mountain range, with a stop at Nabalu Fruit Market to pick up local produce and souvenirs. You'll arrive at Desa Dairy Farm, a working dairy overlooking Mount Kinabalu's peak at 13,435 feet: the farm's views across the pastures are why locals call it "The Little New Zealand" of Sabah. From there, the route continues into Kinabalu National Park, a 754-square-kilometer protected area gazetted in 1964 and recognized as a World Heritage Site.

The canopy walkway is the centerpiece: a 20-minute hike brings you to the 134-foot structure suspended 200 feet above the rainforest floor, where you move through the treetops and see the biodiversity of the park's flora and fauna at eye level. If you prefer not to hike, you can skip the walkway and head straight to Poring Hot Springs and Nature Reserve instead. The hot springs themselves are open-air Japanese-style baths fed by sulfuric water believed to have curative properties. You can soak while looking out at the surrounding hills and park. Lunch is included, and your English-speaking guide will be with you throughout the day in an air-conditioned vehicle.

The full tour runs eight hours from pickup to drop-off at your hotel. During super peak or festive seasons, a 30% surcharge applies and is paid on the day of travel. If you're staying at 1 Borneo Hotels or outskirt hotels, an additional USD 9 per person is charged for pickup and drop-off. Proper hiking shoes, a hat, a warm jacket and a raincoat are recommended. The park is suitable for all fitness levels.

Is this one for you?Eight hours is enough to cover the canopy walkway, the hot springs and Desa Dairy Farm without rushing, but it leaves little room for other activities that same day. If you're combining this with city exploration or a second attraction, plan it as your main outing.
