The experience
The drive from your hotel takes about three hours through the Crocker Range, the highest peaks in Sabah. On the way, you stop at Nabalu Fruit Market to pick up local fruits and souvenirs, then arrive at Desa Dairy Farm, which overlooks Mount Kinabalu across open pastures: locals call it the Little New Zealand of Sabah. The farm sits at the foot of the mountain views that frame the entire day.
At Poring Hot Springs, the main draw is the Treetop Canopy Walkway: a 20-minute hike leads to a 100-metre span suspended 30 metres above the rainforest floor, where you move through the canopy layer most visitors never reach. Afterward, you can soak in the open-air Japanese-style bathtub fed by sulfuric hot water, which locals believe has curative properties. Kinabalu Park itself, Malaysia's first World Heritage Site, covers 754 square kilometres and protects one of the world's most biodiverse rainforests. You'll see Mount Kinabalu's peak from the park: the highest point in Malaysia.
The tour runs eight hours total and includes hotel or cruise terminal pickup and drop-off, an English-speaking guide, an air-conditioned vehicle, lunch, and all entrance fees. A minimum of four travelers is required for the tour to operate. Wear proper hiking shoes, a hat, a warm jacket and a raincoat. The hike to the canopy walk is short but the weather in the mountains can shift quickly.
