The experience

The tour starts with pickup from your hotel or cruise terminal in George Town at 9am, with an English-speaking driver meeting you at the lobby. The first two stops sit across the road from each other: Wat Chayamangkalaram Temple, where you'll see the 4th longest Reclining Buddha Statue, and Dhammikarama Burmese Temple, which holds an 8.2-meter standing Buddha. The tallest in Malaysia. Both temples mark the early settlement of Thai and Burmese communities in the 1800s.

After the temples, a scenic drive takes you through the streets of George Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where you'll see remnants of British colonial architecture and local heritage. The Penang Peranakan Mansion, the former home of Kapitan Chung Keng Kwee, holds over 1,000 antiques and collectibles that show the life and culture of the Straits Chinese. A guided tour inside explains the different rooms and their functions. The final stop is Khoo Kongsi Temple, completed around 1906 and belonging to the Khoo Kongsi clan, which displays fine Chinese architecture and craftsmanship.

The tour runs 4 hours total and includes entrance fees to the Peranakan Mansion and temples, air-conditioned transport, and drop-off back at your hotel or cruise terminal. If you book a private tour, the vehicle is yours alone. If you join a group tour, you'll travel with other visitors. Pickup is included within 1km of the city center. Locations beyond that distance incur a USD 10 surcharge per person, payable on the day.
