The experience
Orang Utan Island sits in Bukit Merah, a conservation project spanning 15 acres dedicated to research and education about endangered species. The island's protected enclosure lets you walk through a tunnel and watch the orangutans as they climb, play and interact in a semi-wild environment: close enough to observe their behavior without disturbing them. The island is located in the outskirts, and travel time to and from it takes up to three hours round-trip, which shapes the pacing of the whole day.
After the island, the tour moves to Chew Jetty, the largest and most intact of Penang's historic clan jetties. Built on stilts over the water more than a century ago, it is part of the Penang Heritage Trail and offers a direct look at how Chinese immigrants settled and lived in this waterfront community. From there you head into George Town, a UNESCO World Heritage site famous for its street art murals: interactive pieces blending historical scenes with humor, created by artists from around the world including Lithuanian artist Ernest Zacharevic. The murals turn the city streets into an open-air gallery.
Your guide speaks English, Chinese or Cantonese and travels with you throughout. Hotel or port pickup and drop-off are included, as is all transportation and parking fees. The tour is private, so only your group participates.
