The experience

The tour picks you up from your Kota Kinabalu hotel at 8:30am and drives to the village, where your guide gives a brief introduction covering key points and cultural taboos before you enter. From 10:15am onward, you walk through six separate traditional houses, each one built and inhabited by a different ethnic group. Bajau, Dusun, Murut, Rungus, Kadazan and Sulu communities. The guide explains the history and customs of each, and you watch demonstrations of local craftsmanship and daily practices as they happen. This is not a museum. The villagers live here, and the demonstrations run subject to availability, so what you see depends on the day.

At 12:45pm you sit down to an authentic buffet lunch prepared by the village people, featuring Sabahan flavours and local dishes. The meal is included and gives you a chance to rest before the 1:30pm departure back to Kota Kinabalu. The whole experience runs about five hours from pickup to drop-off, and the pace is deliberately relaxed: no rushing, no tight schedule.

An English-speaking guide travels with you the entire time, and the air-conditioned vehicle handles the journey both ways. If you're staying at one of the Borneo Hotels or outskirt hotels, an additional charge applies at checkout. During super peak and festive seasons, a 30% surcharge is added and paid on the day of travel. The tour requires a minimum of four travelers to operate. If the group falls short, the operator reserves the right to cancel.

Top questions

Can children come?

Yes. Ticket types: Child (2 to 11 years); Infant (under 2): free.

What are the six ethnic groups whose villages I'll visit at Borneo Cultural Village?

The village represents Sabah's six major ethnic communities: Bajau, Dusun, Murut, Rungus, Kadazan and Sulu. Each has its own traditional house on the grounds, built and occupied by people from that community, so you see how different groups actually live rather than looking at replicas.

What happens during the cultural demonstrations?

Demonstrations of local craftsmanship and daily practices run throughout the morning as part of the village's regular activity. They are subject to availability, so what you witness depends on what the residents are doing on the day you visit. You might see traditional weaving, tool-making, cooking or other customs in action.

Is the lunch included, and what kind of food will I eat?

Yes, lunch is included in the tour price. You eat an authentic buffet prepared by the village people themselves, featuring Sabahan flavours and local dishes. The meal happens at 12:45pm after you've spent the morning exploring the six villages.

Do I need to arrange my own transport to the village, or is pickup included?

Hotel pickup and return from Kota Kinabalu are included in the tour price. Your guide picks you up at 8:30am and brings you back after the 1:30pm departure from the village. If you're staying at one of the Borneo Hotels or outskirt hotels, an additional charge applies at checkout.

How much time do I spend actually walking and exploring versus sitting?

The tour runs about five hours total from pickup to drop-off. The village itself is explored at a relaxed pace starting at 10:15am, with lunch at 12:45pm and departure at 1:30pm. The guide sets a slow, unhurried rhythm so you have time to observe and ask questions rather than moving quickly between stops.

What's the minimum group size, and what happens if not enough people book?

The tour requires a minimum of four travelers to operate. If the group falls short of four, the operator reserves the right to cancel the tour. You would be notified in advance if this happens.
