The experience
You start with a 45-minute drive to Tuaran Town, where the open-air market sits at the heart of local life. The market is where residents shop for fresh produce and food, and where you get a direct look at how Sabah's communities actually move through their day, not staged, just the rhythm of buying and selling. From there you climb to the pagoda at Yu Huang Temple, a Chinese temple decorated in traditional style with views back over the town.
The Tamparuli Suspension Bridge comes next. At 200 metres long, it crosses the river and opens onto views of the countryside beyond. The bridge carries a name from a 1977 Kadazandusun folk song written by Justin Lusah, and locals call it the Lover's Bridge because of the love story tied to it. You walk it, take in the river below and the landscape around it.
The final stop is a Rungus Long House, where you step into the traditional homes and daily life of the Rungus people. A local cultural dance performance happens here before your guide drives you back to your hotel. The whole tour runs five to six hours, with an English-speaking guide in an air-conditioned vehicle throughout.
