The experience
You start at the local marina with a briefing and practice session to learn basic canoe strokes before paddling out. After roughly forty minutes on the water, you'll stop for coffee and snacks, then move into the shallow waters of the Curonian Lagoon where the bulrush and water lilies create shelter for millions of birds migrating through the region each season. The guide brings binoculars and knows where to find them: depending on the time of year, you might see red-necked grebes, bitterns, white-tailed eagles, Montagu's Harriers, cormorants, swans and any of the 170 species recorded here.
The canoe itself is handmade cedar strip, and you'll paddle to multiple spots throughout the day to maximize sightings. Your guide photographs you paddling and also captures aerial shots with a drone. On the return, depending on tide and weather, you may visit the Uostadvaris Lighthouse built in 1876 or the Cape Vente ornithological station, which has a modern exhibition and observation tower. Hotel or port pickup and drop-off are included, and the guide speaks English or Russian.

Is this one for you?You paddle the canoe yourself throughout the day, so this suits travelers who want to move through the landscape under their own power rather than watch from a stationary boat. The nine-hour commitment and remote shallow-water access mean you'll reach bird habitats most visitors never see, but it requires swimming ability and comfort spending a full day in a small boat.
