The experience

You start from your hotel in Klaipeda with pickup included, then ferry across to the Curonian Spit: a 52-kilometer strip of land shaped by wind and water, now protected as a UNESCO world heritage site. The spit narrows to 400 meters in places and widens to 3,800 meters in others, and the landscape shifts as you move through it: migrating dunes tower on one side, the Curonian Lagoon sits calm on the other, and the Baltic Sea lies beyond. Your guide is a professional English speaker who knows the park's ecology and history.

You paddle a handmade cedar strip canoe, the operator's signature vessel, at your own pace through the water and along the shore. The canoe is stable and designed for this terrain. You get a personal flotation device, dry bags for your things, paddles and a set of stylish outdoor chairs so you can sit and absorb the landscape without rushing. Coffee and tea are provided, and the "legendary Wet Weim picnic basket" is part of the day. The route passes the Pervalka Lighthouse, built in 1900 and still operating from its stone base, and takes you through the old fishermen villages that dot the spit. National Park fees are included, so there are no surprises at the gate.

The tour operates in all weather and you'll dress for conditions. Strong wind can force a reschedule, in which case you choose an alternative date or get a full refund. Swimming skills are required because you're on the water for hours, and the minimum age is 10. The whole experience (paddling, sitting, walking the dunes, seeing the lighthouse) takes 6 to 8 hours. Ferry transport to and from the spit is included in the price.

Is this one for you?Book this tour if you're a confident swimmer arriving in Klaipeda with a full day free and want to paddle rather than walk. The canoe lets you cover more ground and reach quieter corners of the spit than a shore-based tour would. The cedar canoe and the picnic setup are what set this operator apart from hiking-only alternatives in the park.
