The experience

You start in Klaipeda and take a skip-the-line ferry across the Curonian Lagoon to reach the Spit itself. Once there, the route moves through a sequence of stops that build on each other: Amber Bay, where amber was first discovered in the 19th century; the Hill of Witches, lined with wooden sculptures drawn from Lithuanian mythology; the Juodkrantė Heron and Cormorant Colony, one of the region's largest bird colonies; and the Grey Dunes, Dead Dunes, a moving sand field that covers some of the largest dune terrain in Europe. The scale of these dunes becomes clear as you stand in them, with views across both the Baltic Sea and the lagoon behind.

Nida is the main village stop, and the itinerary gives you time to walk the promenade past traditional fishermen's houses with their decorative weather vanes, see the Parnidis Dune Sundial, and visit the Thomas Mann Museum, the writer's former summer house. A long stretch of white sand beach and calm water ends the village portion. The tour also passes the Lithuanian–Russian border area and can include a one-hour boat trip on the Curonian Lagoon if you book that option. Smoked fish lunch is available to purchase during the day, and a guided walk through Klaipeda's Old Town can be added at the end if time allows.

Because this is a private tour, the pace is yours to set within the 4- to 8-hour window. Your guide speaks either English or German depending on which option you select at checkout, and the vehicle is air-conditioned with Wi-Fi on board. Ferry transfer, national park fees, and entry to both the Dead Dunes and the Thomas Mann Museum are all included in the price.
