The experience
The National Museum sits in east Beirut and holds the key to understanding what you'll see in the city center. Built in the 1940s, destroyed during the civil war, and reopened in the 1990s, the museum itself tells the story of Lebanon's civilizations and how the city has survived and rebuilt. You spend roughly an hour here before heading downtown, where the real walking begins.
Downtown Beirut was heavily damaged in the 1970s and 1980s but has been restored since the nineties. The walking route takes you past the parliament building, the government palace, Roman-era hammams, Martyrs Square, the Mohamed elAmin Mosque, St. George's Cathedral, and the Beirut Souks: a completely rebuilt open-air shopping district that now anchors the central business area. The walk is moderate in pace and stays within a compact area, so you cover significant ground without strain. You'll finish at the waterfront, where Zaitunay Bay has restaurants, cafes and bars, then drive to Raouche to see the Pigeon Rocks, Beirut's most recognizable symbol, before returning to your hotel.
Your guide meets you at your hotel lobby at 9:00 AM and travels with you in an air-conditioned vehicle. All museum entry fees are covered in the price. The tour works in English, French or Arabic depending on your preference, and children from age 1 are welcome.
