The experience
Pigeon Rocks (two limestone formations rising from the Mediterranean off the Raouche coast) is where the tour begins. Your guide explains the Phoenician trading history of this coastline: the same waters that launched ships to Carthage, Egypt, and beyond, and where the dye that made Phoenicia famous originated. From there, the route moves inland to the National Museum of Beirut, where you spend 90 minutes walking through Phoenician sarcophagi, Roman mosaics, Bronze Age artefacts, and prehistoric finds spanning 1.5 million years. The museum provides the historical framework for everything that follows.
The second half of the tour moves through Beirut's most historically layered landmarks. You drive along the Corniche past the Manara lighthouse, stop at the modern marina (built on the same shores where Phoenician merchants once loaded cedar wood and glass), and see the Holiday Inn Hotel, its bullet-scarred facade left standing deliberately as a monument to the Lebanese Civil War. Martyrs' Square is the emotional center: the site of 1916 Ottoman executions, the 2005 Cedar Revolution, and the 2019 uprising. Standing on this square, you see the Blue Mosque (completed 2008) and the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of Saint George metres apart: a deliberate architectural statement about Lebanese coexistence. Nearby, the Al-Omari Mosque embodies the city's layered history: originally Byzantine, converted to a Crusader chapel, transformed into an Ayyubid mosque after Saladin's reconquest, then expanded under the Mamluks.
The tour ends downtown in the French Mandate quarter at Place de l'Étoile, where the Beirut Souks feature glass floors revealing Phoenician, Hellenistic, and Roman archaeological remains beneath your feet. Roman baths from the 3rd century AD stand in the open air. A city that has been inhabited for 5,000 years does not erase its past but builds around it, on top of it, and sometimes simply leaves it in place. Hotel drop-off follows around 2:00 PM.

Is this one for you?Five hours allows you to cover Beirut's entire historical arc (from prehistoric artefacts to Roman ruins to Civil War sites) without rushing, and leaves the afternoon open for lunch or a second neighborhood. If you need a shorter introduction or want to combine this with other activities, a half-day option would cut the museum time or skip some landmarks.

Top questions
What languages is the guide in?
Live guide in English and Arabic.
What is inside the National Museum of Beirut that makes it worth 90 minutes of a tour?
The National Museum houses Phoenician sarcophagi, Roman mosaics, Bronze Age artefacts, and prehistoric finds spanning 1.5 million years of Lebanese history. It is one of the finest archaeological museums in the Middle East and provides the essential historical context for understanding the city's layered past.
What do the glass floors in the Beirut Souks show you?
The glass floors reveal Phoenician, Hellenistic, and Roman archaeological remains directly beneath your feet as you walk. Post-war Beirut built the souks over rather than erased the ancient marketplace, incorporating the ruins into the building's design.
Why do the Blue Mosque and the Greek Orthodox Cathedral stand so close together?
The two buildings stand metres apart on Martyrs' Square as a deliberate architectural statement about coexistence: a grand mosque and a grand Orthodox cathedral sharing the same square, skyline, and city. The juxtaposition represents Lebanese identity at its best and is tested most severely at its worst.
What does the Al-Omari Mosque show about Beirut's history?
The Al-Omari Mosque is originally a Byzantine church, converted to a Crusader chapel under Frankish occupation, transformed into an Ayyubid mosque after Saladin's reconquest, and expanded under the Mamluks. No single building in Beirut better illustrates the city's extraordinary layered history than this one.
How long is the tour and what time does it end?
The tour lasts five hours, with hotel pickup at 9:00 AM and drop-off around 2:00 PM. This leaves the afternoon free for lunch, rest, or other activities in the city.
