Riga Neighbourhoods Tour: Art Nouveau & Soviet Era Highlights
The largest market in Europe still runs as a working grocery, not a souvenir stall.
A private guided tour of Riga's neighbourhoods beyond the Old Town, covering Art Nouveau villas, a Soviet panel housing district, the Central Market, and the Latvian Academy of Sciences Observation Deck, with transportation, lunch and market tasting included. The route is customisable if you want to add the Medieval Old Town, and most stops see few tourists compared to the city centre.

The experience
Eight to ten hours in a comfortable vehicle driven by your guide takes you through a century of Riga's architecture and urban planning. You start in the UNESCO-listed Art Nouveau district (late 19th and early 20th century buildings, some ornate, some stripped down, some fusing Latvian folk motifs with European styles), then move to Mežaparks, one of the world's first garden cities, where wealthy Rigans built Art Nouveau villas alongside the Song Festival Bandstand and Zoo. The guide explains how each area came to be and what it is now, so you're not just seeing buildings but understanding the city's shape.
The Central Market is still a working grocery bazaar where locals actually shop, not a tourist trap. You'll taste a few traditional Latvian foods depending on the season and can buy items to take home. From there, the Observation Deck of the Latvian Academy of Sciences sits 65 metres high in the Moscow Suburb (a Soviet-era district named for the old road to Moscow), and gives you a view that includes the Old Town, the river, the market, and the less-developed edges of the city. Then you visit one of Riga's islands, where small private gardens have been tended for centuries by residents who grow vegetables and herbs to relax or to sell at the market.
Ziepniekkalns shows Soviet urban planning at scale: rows of concrete panel apartment blocks, including the longest building in Riga. Half a kilometre of grey structure holding nearly 400 identical flats. Lunch is served here in an authentic Soviet setting with Soviet food. The tour ends in Āgenskalns, one of the oldest suburbs and now one of the trendiest, where you'll see the grand Latvian National Library and wooden houses with small cafes. Your guide returns you to your starting point or anywhere else in Riga you choose.

Top questions
What is the Art Nouveau district of Riga like compared to other European cities?
Riga's Art Nouveau area is UNESCO-listed and one of a kind, built in the late 19th and early 20th centuries with a mix of ornate buildings, artistic stripped-down designs, and fusion of Latvian folk motifs with European Art Nouveau styles that you won't see elsewhere.
Is the Central Market in Riga still a real market or has it become a tourist attraction?
The Central Market still functions as an actual grocery market where local people shop for food, not a souvenir market. You'll see what Rigans actually buy and can taste traditional Latvian foods depending on the season.
What can I see from the Latvian Academy of Sciences Observation Deck?
The 65-metre-high observation deck shows the Old Town, the Daugava river, the Central Market, and the less-developed areas of Riga, giving a wider view than other city viewpoints because of its location in the Moscow Suburb to the south.
Does this tour include the Medieval Old Town of Riga?
The tour focuses on neighbourhoods beyond the Old Town, but it is customisable. If you haven't seen the Medieval Old Town yet and have time, you can ask the operator to add it to the itinerary.
How much walking is involved on this tour?
You travel between neighbourhoods by vehicle with your guide, but there is quite a bit of walking involved at each stop to explore the streets and sites.
What does lunch include on this tour?
Lunch is served in Ziepniekkalns in an authentic Soviet setting with traditional Soviet food, reflecting the neighbourhood's Soviet-era character.
