The experience
The palace sits about an hour from Riga, and the four-hour trip covers the drive there, time to explore the building and grounds, and the return. You travel in a private air-conditioned vehicle with pickup from your hotel, so the day fits around the rest of your schedule without waiting for a group to assemble. The driver speaks English and can answer questions about what you're seeing, though a licensed guide, someone trained in the palace's history, is optional and costs extra if you want that level of detail.
Rundale Palace was built starting in 1736 for Ernst Johann von Biron, Duke of Courland, designed by the architect Bartolomeo Rastrelli and finished in 1768. The palace survived occupation during World War I, when it became a German hospital and commandant's office, and later served as a hospital during Napoleon's 1812 invasion of Russia. By the end of the 19th century it was restored and reconstructed. You walk through the palace museum and its gardens at your own pace. The driver doesn't guide you through the rooms, but you can ask him about the building's history before or after.
Museum entry tickets are bought separately at the site, not included in the tour price. If you want a deeper dive into the palace's architecture and the stories behind each room, book a licensed guide when you reserve the trip. The driver will direct you to the ticket office and help coordinate that service.
