The Experience

What happens if you leave your hotel before dawn? You end up standing in a bog in Kemeri National Park watching the light come up over the trees, and it's the kind of quiet that makes you forget you were half asleep an hour ago. The pickup happens about 90 minutes before sunrise — early enough that it stings a little — but there's coffee and a fresh pastry waiting in the car, and by the time you step onto the boardwalk trail, you're awake. The bog itself is still and flat, and you can choose between the short route (around 1.4 kilometers) or the longer one (3.4 kilometers, which includes a viewing tower if you want to climb it). Either way, you're there when the sun actually breaks the horizon, not the Instagram version of it.

After Kemeri, the drive takes you through Jurmala — not the tourist strip, but the parts locals know. You'll see the old wooden houses next to the newer villas, the kind of contrast that tells you something about how the city has changed. There's a stop at the beach where you can stand on the sand for a bit, and in summer you can actually swim in the Baltic if you brought a suit. The whole thing moves at a pace that doesn't feel rushed; it's more like someone showing you around than herding you through checkpoints.

There's also an optional stop at the Dzintari forest viewing tower if it's open (sometimes it closes for safety reasons), which gives you views out over the treetops.
