The Experience

The morning starts with pickup from your hotel and a 50-minute drive to Ala Archa National Park. Once you arrive, you'll get a pair of trekking poles and set out with your guide on the laid trail toward Broken Heart point, a 1.5 km climb into the mountains. The route builds in stops to take in the views—coniferous forest, the river below, the ridge line ahead—so the pace is built around looking, not just moving. At Broken Heart you'll have time to walk around and photograph before descending back down the same trail.

On the drive back to Bishkek, you'll stop at a national restaurant for a complimentary lunch, a chance to taste Kyrgyz cuisine before the afternoon in the city. Once you're back in the capital, the city tour begins at Victory Square, where your guide explains the Second World War monuments and the eternal fire, then moves through the Kyrgyz National Opera and Ballet theater—a striking Soviet-era building—and into Oak Park to see other monuments and the Art gallery. Ala-Too Square, the city's main plaza, is where you'll walk past the historical museum, the Manas hero monument, and the White House, then explore the "Erkindik" or Freedom boulevard and the old railway station, another example of early 20th-century Soviet architecture.

The Kyrgyz State Philharmonic Hall rounds out the architectural stops, and the tour ends at the open-air market—a sprawling bazaar where locals shop for souvenirs, dried fruits, national delicacies and everyday goods. It's the place to pick up something to take home and to see how the city actually moves. After that, your driver takes you back to your hotel.
