The experience
The tour opens in Bishkek at Ala-Too Square and local markets, then heads east toward Issyk-Kul Lake. Day two takes you to Burana Tower, a 10th-century minaret near Tokmok, where you can climb the structure and see Balbal stone carvings: ancient Turkic gravestones that mark the Silk Road's passage through the region. From there you drive to Cholpon-Ata on the lake's northern shore and explore the Petroglyphs Open-Air Museum, where rock carvings document centuries of nomadic life.
The heart of the trip runs through the high country. You drive through Grigoriev and Semenov Gorges, then trek about an hour to Suttu Bulak Lake in the Kyrchyn Jailoo. In Karakol, you visit the Dungan Mosque and Russian Orthodox Church: two faiths that coexist in this mountain town. The next day, a special car takes you 10 km into Altyn Arashan, a valley famous for its natural hot springs. You soak in the thermal pools surrounded by peaks. The following morning you start at 8am for the trek to Ala-Kul Lake, sitting at 3,560 meters with water so turquoise it looks unreal from glacial melt and mineral content. Horse riding is included on portions of the route where the terrain suits it.
The return journey moves through Jeti-Ögüz Canyon (also called the Seven Bulls Rocks for its distinctive red formations), and Kok Zhaiyk Valley, known for spruce forests and nomadic herding camps. You stay at a yurt camp in Bokonbaevo to experience that side of Kyrgyz life. The final days take you through Chon-Kemin National Park, a 500,000-hectare reserve stretching from the Kemin Valley to the Kungey Alatau range, before returning to Bishkek and a morning visit to Ala-Archa National Park, 40 km south in the Tian Shan, before heading to the airport.
