The experience
The trek begins in Kyzart village, where a Kyrgyz family serves lunch before you meet your guide and receive a short riding introduction covering how to sit, stop and guide the horse. No previous experience is required. The first day's ride climbs gradually through open valleys and mountain pastures into the jailoo (the highland summer grounds used by Kyrgyz shepherds for centuries), and takes around 3 to 4 hours before you reach Kilemche for the night in a traditional shepherd's house.
Day two is the longest stretch. After breakfast, the trail climbs steadily toward the Jalgyz Karagai Pass at 3,400 metres, where parts of the ascent feel demanding but the alpine views widen with every hour. From the pass, Song Kul appears for the first time: a vast lake surrounded by open grasslands where nomadic families spend summer with their livestock. You descend to the yurt camp by early afternoon, leaving the rest of the day free to walk by the water, rest, or simply sit with the landscape. Dinner is served in the yurt, and on clear nights the stars above the lake are stark and close.
The return on day three follows a different trail, crossing the Kara-Kiya Pass at roughly 3,400 metres before descending back to Kyzart. This loop route means new scenery on the way down rather than retracing the same path. After around 4 hours on horseback, the trek finishes at the family guesthouse, where a final lunch is served before you depart for Bishkek. A guide in English or Russian accompanies the entire trek. Transfers to and from Bishkek are available as an optional add-on at checkout.
