The experience

Five days means you leave Bishkek and reach the Tian Shan mountains without rushing through either one. Day one takes you to Burana Tower, a medieval Silk Road monument near Tokmok where you can climb for views across the valley, then into Chon-Kemin National Park's forested valleys. Day two follows the northern shore of Issyk Kul Lake (one of the world's largest alpine lakes) to Karakol, your base for skiing and canyon exploration.

The skiing happens at Karakol Ski Base in the Tian Shan, with slopes for beginners and experienced skiers. Equipment is included and your guide assists throughout the day. The canyon days are the heart of it: you explore Jeti-Oguz (the "Seven Bulls" sandstone formation 25 km southwest of Karakol), Broken Heart Gorge, and Barskoon Gorge with its mountain waterfalls. The hiking there runs one to two hours depending on your pace. That night you stay in a traditional yurt with wifi and hot shower, not a romanticized version but the real thing.

On the final day you drive through Skazka Canyon (the name means "Fairy Tale" in Russian), a sandstone valley that opens suddenly as the mountains part, then return to Bishkek or head to Manas airport. The private guide handles all logistics and translation. Breakfasts and dinners are included throughout. Nights in the mountains are cold, so bring warm layers, hiking shoes, a rain jacket, sunglasses and sunscreen: the weather shifts fast at altitude.

Is this one for you?The tour moves each day (you drive from Bishkek to the mountains, ski one full day, then hike canyons for several hours on day four), so it suits travelers comfortable with varied activity rather than a single base. The overnight yurt stay and canyon hikes are the payoff for that pace, and they are not available on shorter Kyrgyzstan itineraries.

Top questions

What is Jeti-Oguz and why is it called the Seven Bulls?

Jeti-Oguz is a sandstone rock formation about 25 km southwest of Karakol. The name means "seven bulls" because the rocks resemble seven bulls standing together. It is a protected nature monument and a major stop on day four of the tour.

Ski equipment is included in the tour price. You do not need to rent separately or bring your own.

What does the private guide do during the tour?

How long is the drive from Karakol to Jeti-Oguz canyon?

The drive from Karakol to Jeti-Oguz Gorge takes about one hour. After exploring the canyon, you continue to Barskoon Gorge, where easy hiking around the waterfalls takes one to two hours depending on your pace.
